Let's answer some commonly asked questions to put your mind at ease.
Pre-licensed refers to the phase of professional development I am in. It means I have my Master's Degree and am in the process of getting my Minnesota state Marriage and Family Therapy License. As part of the requirements to obtain my license, I must work with clients under the professional mentorship of a licensed MFT. I meet with my supervisor weekly in order to assure I am providing quality care.
When using insurance for therapy services, therapists are required to diagnose clients using the DSM-5. Otherwise, insurance will not pay. Though I am not opposed to applying diagnoses when appropriate, I value the freedom to provide therapy without the pressure of labeling clients with disorders. I believe this creates a better environment for everybody.
During the first session, we will go over your rights as a client and important laws concerning confidentiality. Then we will work together to develop some goals to help guide our time together. I will also want to know more about the issues that brought you to therapy, your family, and your favorite activities. Typically sessions are 53 minutes long.
For my first session with children & teens, one or both parents need to be present for the beginning 5-10 minutes of the session. More parental involvement may be necessary throughout the therapy process depending on the concerns brought in. Information shared by your child in session will be kept confidential unless there are important safety concerns.
The short answer is yes! As a Christian myself, I understand how foundational our faith is to our lives, and therefore, our healing. As I get to know you in the therapy process, we can collaborate on what this could look like practically as it is different for everybody.
